What makes a good teacher?

วันพฤหัสบดีและวันศุกร์ที่ 12-13 วันนี้หาและอ่านข้อมูลเพื่อทำวิจัยเวลากลับเมืองไทย ตุ๊กก็อ่านเจอการเป็นครูที่ดีซึ่งเมื่ออ่านจบแล้วมาเทียบกับตัวเองแล้วรู้สึกว่าตัวเรายังเป็นอาจารย์ไม่ดีอยู่บ้างในบางข้อที่แนะนำโดยนักเรียนที่นักวัจัยในต่างประเทศได้สำรวจ แต่อย่างไรก็ตามตุ๊กเชื่อว่าทุกคนมีความสามารถที่จะเลือกที่จะเป็นและทำ ที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลง และที่จะโต ซึ่งบอกกับตัวเองว่าจะพยายามเป็นอาจารย์ให้ดีที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ และจะพยายามพัฒนาตัวเองทุกวัน จากการสำรวจมีทั้งหมด 11 ข้อด้วยกันดังที่อยู่ด้านล่างในภาคภาษาอังกฤษ

นอกจากนี้แล้วช่วงบ่ายก็พานักเรียนที่สมัครใหม่และเพิ่งมาถึงประเทศออสเตรเลียเพื่อไปทัศนศึกษารอบเมืองหลังจากที่พวกเขาได้สอบพูดและเขียนในช่วงเช้า พวกเราผ่านสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวในเมืองหลายที่มากๆ ต้องบอกว่าเมืองนี้มีที่ให้เทียงและไปเยี่ยมชมเยอะมาก และน่าสนใจมากๆ เช่น ที่ยอดเขา Mt.Coottha ซึ่งนักท่องเที่ยวได้เห็นวิวที่ทำให้เกือบหยุดหายใจจากทิวทัศน์ที่ได้เห็นข้างหน้าของพวกเรา เมืองสวยมากๆ จากด้านบนภูเขานี้ ระหว่างทางขึ้นพวกเรานั่งรถผ่านสุสาน สุสานนี้ไม่ปรกติเพราะเปิดให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้ทัวน์กันด้วยเพราะเป็นสุสานที่เก่าแก่อันหนึ่ง มีนักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาเยี่ยมชมกันมาก ตุ๊กคิดอยู่เหมือนกันว่าจะมาเยียมชมสุสานหรือป่าช้าภาษาบ้างเราก่อนกลับบ้าน ระหว่างทางเรายังได้ผ่านโรงงานผลิตเบียร์ที่มีชื่อมากของรัฐ Queensland สวนหย่อมที่นี่ก็สวยงามและเก่าแก่อยู่ใจกลางเมืองด้วยเหมือนกัน


Thursday and Friday 12-13 June 2008. While searching for research articles for my upcoming academic paper about factors that relate to students' learning achievement in English, I came across a crucial point about being a good teacher. After a quick read, I knew in my heart that I am not yet a good one. Don't Never say Never, I thought,I still have many more years ahead of me to fix my not-so-good teaching habits (such as not trying hard enough to memorize my students' names). However, I am not going to wait around until I burn out. I do believe that everyone has a capacity to choose, to change and to grow. Anyway, cited from Jeremy Harmer's How to Teach English, a survey of students studying at a Cambridge comprehensive school, students agreed that a good teacher conveys the followings:
1)They should make their lessons interesting so you don't fall asleep.
2)A teacher must love her job. If she really enjoys her job that's make the lessons more interesting.
3)A teacher has his or her won personality and doesn't hide it from the students so that he or she is not only a teacher but a person as well.
4)A teacher who has lots of knowledge, not only of his subject.
5)A good teacher is an entertainer in a positive sense.
6)A teacher should be approachable.
7)A good teacher has an affinity with the students that they're teaching.
8) A good teacher should try and draw out the quiet ones and control the more talkative ones.
9)A good teacher should be able to correct people without offending him.
10)A good teacher is someone who helps rather than shouts.
11) A good teacher is someone who knows our names!

On Friday, there was a new intake of almost 60. New students had speaking and writing tests from the morning until about 1.00 pm. I visited a speaking test one. All students came from different background of English. However, one thing that I found is that one cannot speak a second language fluently or at least convey a little conversation if they lack of confidence and value themselves very low in regard to the ability to improve their English skills. Many students tried so hard to get their messages across. However, once they begin taking courses, they will become more exposed to the language and become better. Here, immersion plays a great deal in improving their English skills versus Thai students who learn English in Thailand. They don't have that same kind of luxury; however, I do believe that they can better and then master their English skills...they just have to work harder and be more ambitious to learn and to grow.

Then, something fun happened in my afternoon of Thursday...good one. After half a day of speaking and writing tests, Fiona (the teacher who runs all the activities for GELI students)and I took the new intake on a tour "downtown" (Fiona liked the termed I use a lot! I guess it reminded her of a song in the 80s. Normally, people here will call it "Centre City." Within about 2 hours, we stopped at several places like Mt. Coot Tha Lookout, located in the West of Brisbane where you can see the panorama of Brisbane's suburbs since it's one of the highest mountains in the area. It's a very romantic place where men like to make their marriage proposal or even say "I DO" there. You can see the Brisbane River snaking through the suburbs. Then, we stopped at South Bank to look at Griffith University Conservatory(school of music, art and performances) There, they usually have performances by students. On the way to both places, we drove passed many famous places, buildings and parks. One of the places we saw is actually my colleague's favorite brand for beer..It's called XXXX. The Castlemaine XXXX Brewery is located in the West of city and is Queensland's icon for beer-loving tourists. It's Australia owned...and it's goooood! We also passed the most famous cemetery which is one of the tourists' sightseeing spots! Yep! You heard it correctly. Toowong Cemetery hosts about hundred thousand graves. It's established around 1875. Head stones tell the story of the trials, tribulation and triumphs of Queensland's early settlers. It is a cemetery for a tour. When I heard it I just could not believe my own ears that people are willing to pay to go see dead bodies (I mean not even the bodies...actually their graves). I might try to go on this tour some day before I go home since I was invited by a teacher I met through Judy. She is claimed to be "an expert." :) Also, we passed a City Botanic Garden located in the Central part of the city. The historic garden was established in 1855. It is a natural and historic heritage-walking down the avenues lined with majestic bunya pines, wild flowers,plants and wild birds. It reminded me of the Central Park in NYC (different in size though). It's a very beautiful garden really! This is pretty much for the day. I was completely drained when I got home. It was another memorable day!
